Your recent story (Instructors Evaluations One Click Away for College Students, January 14th, 2013) does little to shed insight or balance on an important issue in post-secondary education. Evaluations are a key part of ensuring that programs and courses provide students with knowledge, skills and confidence.
The biggest disappointment was that your reporter chose to rely exclusively on two administrators for comment rather than consider the views of faculty who, after all, would be the focus of any evaluation. Had your reporter taken the time to contact our faculty association he would have gathered some important facts.
For example, our association along with CNC's administration, have been in discussions for the last year about developing a fair and sensible system for evaluation, a point that Bryn Kulmatycki, Vice-President Academic at CNC - and the key person that our association has been dealing with on this issue - failed to include in his comments to your reporter. In fact, at meetings with our association Dr. Kulmatycki has said he places less weight on the reliability of student evaluations in comparison with other forms of evaluation, another point that never made its way into your story. Those are unfortunate oversights that both your reporter and Dr. Kulmatycki need to clarify for your readers.
