As I write this, CBC Radio is engaged in an effort to raise something short of a million dollars to support food banks in British Columbia.
Yes, food banks, those "temporary" bodies established to feed our hungry through the recession of the eighties.
While many Canadian families struggle to feed themselves, our federal government prepares to commit forty billion or so dollars to purchase and maintain futuristic American jet planes. Pray tell, what purpose do they imagine these high-tech monsters might serve aside from the goal of
supporting American manufacturers? Where is the threat to justify the spending of so much treasure?
Are we afraid our southern neighbours would invade Canada? Give your head a shake.
Are we contemplating an invasion by China? Not likely. By the time China would be able to support a cross-ocean assault they will have completed the task of buying Canada. They would be bombing their own properties.
So where lies the need for stealth fighter jets? I suggest that they would serve only to support future American overseas adventures in which we seem to be ever so willing to act as junior partners. Remember that when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
