Stay busy in the cold

It's time to start wrapping up the garden for another season as the fall weather starts to creep in. Lino and I have been busy peeling and canning apples. I have a great recipe for canned apple pie filling.

Longtime Prince George resident Willie McDermid worked as the foreman for McDermid and Lofting for 50 years and retired when he was 65. Willie just turned 82 so he can now be called a "Super Ager".

Super Agers is the latest new term and it describes men and women in their 80s or older who have remarkable memories. In his day Willie was a great baseball player, however since he retired he has turned in his baseball bat and glove for a deck of cards. He is an excellent bridge player and plays the game several times a week. A good memory is certainly a requirement for that game!

Willie says his biggest accomplishment during his past 61 years in Prince George was when he took his fastball team to Rock Island, Illinois to the World Softball Tournament in 1966. The trip was sponsored by the Columbus Hotel, Gerry Cole and Don Young. Some of the team players were Larry Honeyman, Gordy Dondale, Gary Carelli, Jim Horswell and Willie's brother Neil McDermid.

Birthdays for September that I know about: Eva Werlberger, Roberta Barnes, Jeannette Rogers, Marg Anklovitch, Ernesteen McNeil, Dave McGraw, Mary Crooks, Colin Blair, Al Thorp, Werner Engler, Joellen Burgess, Pamela Cunin, Velma Wortman, Nancy Thurier, Hazel Seaman, Bernice Elsoe, Jack Rosevear, Gerda Korolek, Irene Rigler, Mike Bundock and Len Shankel.

This week's unintended best kept secret is that bridge is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at the various senior centres here in Prince George.
