Standards for care were comforting

In light of the recent news regarding the BC Cancer Agency's report, I wanted to once again give thanks and support for the cancer care I received in 2005-06 while a resident of Prince George.

In light of the recent news regarding the BC Cancer Agency's report, I wanted to once again give thanks and support for the cancer care I received in 2005-06 while a resident of Prince George. At the time of my first chemotherapy treatment, I was told that there was a possibility that my breast cancer had spread to my bones. After a couple of consultations, I was given a strong sense of hope by my oncologist Dr. Bishop, my family doctor, Dr. John Mah and the many wonderful nurses of the cancer clinic. They clearly laid out the parameters of how they would determine to some degree of certainty whether the cancer had spread or not. The anxiety of waiting several months to determine the outcome was difficult, but was made so much easier because of all the wonderful support my husband and I received from the doctors and nurses of the cancer clinic. I was then told that the unknown shadow on the bone in my leg would need to be continued to be followed as there still was no guarantee.

My doctors continued to follow my unknown findings every six months over several years. I think what held us steadfast was knowing that the procedures they were following were the same standard of care that I would have received anywhere in B.C. What was also helpful was knowing that the B.C. standards of care were being promoted as the best in Canada. I am truly grateful for the care I received and I know that the residents of Prince George will continue to get the care that they need in their new facility.
