I have written this to try and better understand the parking problem in the downtown core.
I work downtown and have had an off-site parking stall for years so I do not take up the street stalls from the public who use the services and store downtown.
I just received a letter that has informed me that my stall rental will increase more than 47 per cent. I thought that rent should not increase any more than the tenancy rent can increase, which is inflation plus two per cent.
The Canadian inflation over the past three years was at its maximum at 3.5 per cent.
So how can a car stall rental increase more than 47 per cent? Mine did.
The city and council have looked at the parking problem in the downtown core and from what I understood, decided to leave things. What has just surfaced will drive more people to move from off-street parking to on-street parking. At the new rate I will be paying about $0.70 per hour and for a seven-hour day that will be $4.83 per day.
I am thinking I will move my car every few hours to save $1,134 per year.
