Quinson elementary school's craft night was a huge success. Many families enjoyed making a variety of Christmas ornaments while also enjoying a hot chocolate and cookie. Quinson students are demonstrating outstanding generosity with our 12 Days of Giving. There are many boxes filled with food items and toys. The boxes will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army. All students in Grades 4 to 7 have a chance to join the "Red Cedar Club." This is a club where students read 12 Canadian books by the end of March and then vote on their favourite book. The votes are tallied across B.C. and the winning author earns the Red Cedar Award. A team is then selected from the school to compete in the Battle of the Books hosted by SD 57.

Fun and excitement is in the air at Westwood elementary. A silent auction, organized by the PAC was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who donated or bought items. With standing room only, parents, grandparents and family friends watched on as students sang, danced and celebrated in the Christmas concert. In keeping with Christmas spirit, students have been bringing in food donation items for the Salvation Army to help those in need.

As 2010 comes to an end, many activities have been planned for the last week of school. Many classes are working together (big and little buddies) creating crafts, singing carols, writing letters and reading books. Mr. Elson's class is planning a tobogganing field trip while the Grade 6 and 7 students are heading to the ice oval on Thursday.

Congratulations go out to the PGSS junior girls' basketball team for winning the D.P. Todd invitational tournament and to our senior boys' basketball team for winning the tournament in Grande Prairie. This past week Grade 5, 6, 7 students from Highglen Montessori elementary school participated in a transition event. The students got a chance to visit and participate in classes and then watch the play "Oliver Twist." Today, Ms. Bernard's dance class will be performing at Vanier Hall in period four. The spirit game will be held at 1 p.m. Friday against College Heights. It is exciting that elementary students from three of our feeder schools: Highglen, Westwood and Pinewood will be joining us. We are asking students to bring in a non-perishable food item for the food bank. Thanks to The Free the Children Club for collecting 37 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas child. The justice league is also receiving thanks for organizing our food drive.

This year Malaspina elementary school is pleased to present the country-western themed musical Santa's Holiday Hoedown, A Christmas Jamboree. The story begins with Santa's toyshop being in danger of going bust. With no money to purchase materials there is no means to make presents, which means no Christmas. Santa, Mrs. Claus, the elves and the reindeer go on the road from the North Pole to Prince George, to raise the money needed to save Christmas by doing a country-western musical show. Malaspina students and staff have been working very hard and this year's concert promises not to disappoint.

Two performances of the concert are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Immaculate Conception school presents the Christmas Wizard of Oz this week when Dorothy does indeed get caught in a blizzard before meeting the wizard. The school choir will perform a concert for their fellow students on Wednesday at the annual "Cookies and Choir" event. Thank you to all the parents and parishioners who will be baking the special treats for this event. To round off the week there will be a staff against Grade 7 volleyball showdown, which always generates huge excitement for all involved.

The holiday spirit thrives at cole Heather Park elementary as staff and students have generously donated 1000 plus non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army's food bank. Organised by our leadership students, this total will undoubtedly grow, as there is a lunchtime Sock Hop planned for today, with the price of admission one canned good. Our PAC plans to host a Christmas celebration from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday. They have planned an evening of fun, festivities, food (desserts and appies), music and activities for the kids. They will also be collecting a non-perishable food item to "pay it forward." Some classroom teachers have organized their students into family groupings for Christmas themed stations on Thursday. Watch your trees for Dog Bone Reindeer ornaments and paper candy canes too. In keeping with a Heather Park library tradition, Mrs. Weisgarber, our teacher-librarian, will be treating our intermediate classes to a week-long Christmas boot camp. 'Reindeer Games' is a fun style of Christmas trivia, relays and other team challenges.

On the last day of school Santa will visit, our fledgling band students will perform a mini-concert and there will be an afternoon sing-a-long.

The students of Highglen Montessori elementary have a variety of events planned this week to share the holiday spirit. The "Smitten with Mittens" line is hung up near the school office and donations are hung, to be given to those who are needy. Canned and dry goods are being collected in the Salvation Army boxes. Leadership group is collecting items for the baskets to be given to seniors in our area. Mrs. Haddock's class will be singing Christmas carols at Simon Fraser Lodge this morning, while students from Mrs. Rockwell and Mrs. Nemitz' class will be decorating cookies with the residents at Jubilee Lodge on the same day.

Students from seven classes will be taking the bus to the CN Centre on Friday to watch the hockey game between PGSS and College Heights. We wish all of our students and staff happy and safe holidays and all the best the season has to offer.
