Special Olympics alive and well

I was very pleased to see Special Olympics mentioned in your article, "Volunteer For A Better Future," on August 20. Prince George has a very active local of Special Olympics.

I was very pleased to see Special Olympics mentioned in your article, "Volunteer For A Better Future," on August 20.

Prince George has a very active local of Special Olympics. We currently have 125 to 130 athletes with developmental disabilities, from ages eight to adult, registered in a variety of sports. Our local runs solely on volunteers. One of the most rewarding volunteer positions is as a coach in one or more of the sports venues.

The sports that we will be offering for our 2011-12 season include Swimming, Rhythm Gymnastics, basketball, power lifting, five pin bowling, 10 pin bowling, curling, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, soccer, track and field, and golf.

We welcome any inquiries on volunteering and welcome any teenagers who feel this may be a rewarding experience for them. For any information on volunteering, please call Barbara Conway, volunteer co-ordinator, at 250-563-5756.

Special Olympics B.C., Prince George local, will have a booth at Pine Center Mall during Rec Mart weekend on Sept. 10 and 11. We will be registering for athletes with developmental disabilities and anyone interested in volunteering. Come and check us out!
