Song of the Day - June 6

Had a great time last Saturday at the scotch tasting fundraiser for Theatre North West.

Kyle Wightman, Country 97's morning man, was the winner of the door prize, a bottle of 21-year-old Glenlivet. He graciously opened the bottle and shared it with everyone, a most generous act considering that same bottle goes for $200 at your local liquor store.

When he handed me my glass of this most tasty and rare treat, he let me have it for not having more country music choices in the Citzen's song of the day.

"Three times!" he thundered. "Just three times has the song of the day been country!"

When I told him I have picked Johnny Cash and Steve Earle songs before, he clarified his stance to modern country music that his station plays.

With glass in hand and admittedly a little drunk, I accepted his challenge but, alas, now that the alcohol has worn off, I'm taking a different approach with not one, not two, but three country songs for your Saturday listening pleasure.

One of the chums of my friend Marnie Hamagami said her favourite country song of late was the Miley Cyrus cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene and enthusiastically played it for us on her phone. Spot the kid who grew up with country in the house (and Dolly Parton as her godmother) - it's gorgeous. See it here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOwblaKmyVw).

Now let me tie the original Parton classic with Carrie Underwood's Two Black Cadillacs. Dee Jay Silver has made a nice niche for himself doing remixes and mashups of country songs. Check out this seamless merger of Jolene and Two Black Cadillacs at www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlgNRJlmCHw.

Thanks again for the scotch, Kyle.

Slinte!
