On Feb. 27 actor, director, photographer, author and poet Leonard Nimoy died at the age of 83.

Although he was a multitalented man who excelled at a wide variety of artistic pursuits, it was his iconic portrayal of the half-alien, half-human Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek TV series that defined his career.

Although the original series only ran from 1966 to 1969, it became a cult classic that launched movies, several subsequent TV series, video games and more. No doubt a great deal of the success of the series hinged on Nimoy's nuanced performance as Spock.

As Spock, he created a different kind of science fiction hero than people were used to. While William Shatner played the familiar space cowboy archetype as Capt. Kirk, Nimoy's Spock was intellectual, insightful and philosophical.

Nimoy was still playing Spock as recently as the 2013 movie Star Trek Into Darkness, and made a voice cameo in 2012 on the hit TV series The Big Bang Theory.

So, for the decades of enjoyment Nimoy brought to science fiction fans, today's song of the day is for him.

Spaceman, by Canadian alt-rocker Bif Naked, comes from her 1998 album I, Bificus. A popular remix by the Boomtang Boys was a chart topper for Bif Naked.

The official music video for the remix is online here: http://youtu.be/Hai0zxSC9-M.

However, I prefer the grungier rock version which can be heard online here: http://youtu.be/7saoB6rLxYY.
