Um, where did the years go?
Bryan Adam's monster album Reckless came out 30 years ago this past Wednesday. Six of its 10 songs made top 15 or better on Billboard's Hot 100, according to Wikipedia, an accomplishment that had only been preceded by Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bruce Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A. Reckless was the first Canadian record to sell more than one million units in Canada and it sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. Not bad for a 10-song album clocking in at under 38 minutes.
The first single, Run To You, set the tone and remains one of my favourite 80s songs, even though the grammar Nazi in me winces every time he sings "that would change if she ever found out about you and I," instead of "you and me." Who cares? Run To You makes infidelity sound freakin' great, the guitar hooks are fabulous, especially the powerful bridge leading to the final chorus and that rock-solid, chugging bass line is money.
Adams is on tour across the U.K. and Europe to mark the 30th anniversary of Reckless. After Christmas, he'll bringing the tour to Canada with stops through B.C. in January, but alas, no Prince George date.
The last time he was in Prince George, he did perform Run To You near the end of his set, disguising it with a long instrumental introduction. The video is a big hunk of 80s cheese that tries to romanticize a song about running to the wrong girl for all the right reasons. Check it out - www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF5LaVkDhyk.
