I often turn to Johnny Reid, one of our great Canadian artists, to sing the sentiments to echo what's in my aching heart, so for now it's got to be 'Till We Meet Again.
Today is a sad day. We lost an incredible 92-year-old community member, friend, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather Tuesday. A decorated veteran, a member of the B.C. Old Time Fiddlers, who brought cheer everywhere he went, Michael St. Germain was one of a kind.
I can't help but imagine, as I listen to the heartfelt lyrics of this song, that they might reflect Mike's sentiments to his friends, family and especially to the love of his life, Aileen.
"Until we meet again, may your troubles be few, I hope life's good to you, may your heart beat steady and strong and I wish you the best, may you find happiness, every step on the road you're on."
Johnny Reid chose to have just a piano and a fiddle accompany him during the song. It's a lovely reminder for those who knew Mike as an enthusiastic fiddle player. And really, there's nothing more poignant than the sound of a lone fiddle weeping away, reflecting our tears at the loss of such a lovely man, whose ready smile and teasing wit brought joy to our community.
So 'Till We Meet Again, Mike, here's my humble tribute to you from Johnny Reid. Hear it on YouTube: http://youtu.be/IjKde3Q9uIg.
