The civic election is heating up and as the local government reporter at the paper, I'm supposed to be all over that. So I took the opportunity this long weekend to do as little as possible and try and recharge for what's going to be a pretty eventful few weeks until Nov. 15.
The bulk of my weekend was spent watching movies, catching up on titles I've missed or selections from some of my favourite actors' back catalogues.
One of those movies was The Conspirator, the 2010 Robert Redford-directed tale of Mary Surratt who was executed as having a part in the Abraham Lincoln assassination plot and the young lawyer who had the unwieldy task of trying to defend her in court.
Overall, a pretty good flick, but what stuck with me most was the song playing over the end credits. It had a hauntingly beautiful quality that made me immediately race to the Internet to find out who was responsible for it.
Turns out it was Empty by American indie-folkster Ray LaMontagne off his 2006 album Till The Sun Turns Black. Full of strings and with lyrics that don't offer much in the way of hope, it perfectly captured the tone of the movie that history has ensured didn't have a happy ending.
Grab a blanket, a couch to curl into and check out Empty here: http://youtu.be/mT69zOTNa8Q.
