For a time, hating Nickelback was a pop culture trend.
After all their music is predicable, vapid, lacking creativity and frequently chauvanistic. But the same thing could be said for all popular country music songs, and that doesn't stop millions of people from enjoying them.
Nickelback, originally from Hanna, Alta. but now based in Vancouver, are a guilty pleasure. They are basically an '80s hair metal band for the 21st Century - dishing up fist-pumping rock anthems and schmultzy power ballads with equal enthusiasm.
Their new single Edge of a Revolution, which will be on Nickelback's upcoming eighth album No Fixed Address, definitely falls into the fist-pumping category. Released on Aug. 18, it debuted at No. 34 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 chart.
It's not great art, but it is entertaining. And that's exactly what pop music should be.
