Song of the Day

With the Montreal Canadiens moving on to the third round of the NHL playoffs, with nothing but the New York Rangers in the way from their first appearance in the Stanley Cup final since they last won it all in 1993, it seems fitting to go with a band from Montreal.

The Box had other minor hits, such as My Dreams of You and Ordinary People, but their most memorable contribution to 1980s Canadian pop was the happiness-infused single Closer Together from 1987.

The backing vocals on Closer Together were so good that Sass Jordan was quickly signed to her own record contract.

The song seems to just be dripping with joy, just like most Canadiens fans are these days, especially after dispatching their arch-rivals, the Boston Bruins, in a seven-game back-alley brawl this past week.

Meanwhile, I finally settled a lunch bet this week that I lost about Canadiens goaltender (and Williams Lake native) Carey Price during the Winter Olympics (I thought Price would get just one start and Montreal-raised Roberto Luongo would go the rest of the way, silly me). As a result, I took two work colleagues (and good friends) dressed in their matching Canadiens jerseys out for a bite on Thursday.

Closer Together is for them and for all the Habs fans out there. Check out the video, filmed in the sunny Dominican Republic, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFT1l50CgHo.
