Song of the day

As has been evinced in this space a few times before, I'm a big fan of music with lyrics that don't match the mood of the music accompanying them.

As has been evinced in this space a few times before, I'm a big fan of music with lyrics that don't match the mood of the music accompanying them.

I went on a bit of a 90s kick this weekend, and indulged in some tunes that have been long out of vogue.

One of them was Laid by James. The titular song from the English rockers James's 1993 album resurfaced later in the decade when it was used as the theme for the American Pie film.

The music is your typical 1990s Brit pop and the vocals feature a soaring falsetto, but the lyrics are a little on the dark side (right up my alley) painting a picture of truly dysfunctional relationship that neither party seems capable of ending: "Moved out of the house so you moved in next door/I locked out, you cut a hole in the wall... You're driving me crazy/When are you coming home?"

If you're looking for the perfect song to complete your 90s party playlist, this one will fit right in next to Tubthumping.
