Song of the Day

While on a recent vacation I made the mistake of going to a big city outlet mall during the Labour Day long weekend -also known as the last shopping weekend before the return of school.

While on a recent vacation I made the mistake of going to a big city outlet mall during the Labour Day long weekend -also known as the last shopping weekend before the return of school.

At first it seemed the teeming press of shoppers were like a school of blood-mad piranhas, picking the back-to-school sales racks to the bone. But on reflection, as I waited and waited to try on one item, I began to see the shoppers as the victims of our out-of-control commercialist culture.

Instead of river full of piranhas, the mall was a feedlot and the shoppers were pigs naively gorging themselves on 50-per-cent-off skinny jeans and over-priced designer status symbols -all while the corporate butchers greedily rubbed their fat little hands together.

Either way, it put me in the mood to listen to Billy Talent's excellent roast of pop culture and fashion: Surprise Surprise, from the 2012 album Dead Silence.

The Canadian punk rockers deliver razor-sharp social commentary with a hard-driving beat -perfect punk.
