This weekend, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of my in-laws Heather and Monty Manahan. I am sure there are many ways to explain what makes a marriage work for 40 years. When I think about the success of Heather and Monty's marriage, I like to think of it in terms of camping.
We never went camping when I was a kid and I never really understood the appeal. So, when Monty and Heather invited my wife and I to go camping for my first time with them, I was a little apprehensive. Having never spent much time outdoors, it seemed like I would be a stranger to this sort of thing. On the lake though, listening to the gentle laps of the waves and Monty's soft music quietly on the stereo, I found a profound comfort in just being there. I felt there was an uninterrupted connection with nature and with each other that accompanies camping. It is something I treasure very much and when I am at the lake enjoying these times, I feel truly content. When I think about the 40 years that Heather and Monty have been together, I think they know the value of taking the time to appreciate how good their life is together. They are truly content.
This sentiment is embodied in one of Monty's favorite camping songs by Goose Creek Symphony called "A Satisfied Mind". It is today's song of the day. Relax, listen and take the time to savor how good your own life is. Happy Anniversary Heather and Monty.
