Song of the Day

Some songs you only need to hear once to immediately know they are going to be a big hit. Others creep up slowly, only gaining momentum from repeated plays and word of mouth.

Some songs you only need to hear once to immediately know they are going to be a big hit.

Others creep up slowly, only gaining momentum from repeated plays and word of mouth.

Safe and Sound, by the American indie group Capital Cities, is the second kind of song. Released as a single in February 2011, Safe and Sound has been working its way up the charts around the world. It is expected to appear on the band's first studio album later this year.

On the first listen, Safe and Sound is saccharine summer ear candy - simple and sweet. But after hearing it a couple times, the song has some subtle depth.

The music video, which contrasts stock footage of dancers from the turn of the century onward with war and disaster footage through the decades, reinforces the theme of hope in the face of challenges.
