By the time this is printed I'll probably be a dad, so I figured a song about fatherhood would be a good pick for this week.
There is plenty of songs about deadbeat dads, working dads who missed out on their kids' lives, sappy tributes to dead dads, and tragic songs about dads losing their children. I guess normal, healthy parental relationships don't make for great musical inspiration.
Lacking a song about a good paternal figure, I reckoned I'd pick a song about the very best bad dad ever to grace a sheet of music.
A Boy Named Sue, performed by country music legend Johnny Cash and written by poet Shel Silverstein, is a salty Old West yarn about a tough-as-nails deadbeat dad teaching his son a hard lesson.
To watch Cash perform the song in San Quentin State Prison in 1969, go online here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOHPuY88Ry4 or scan this page with Layar.
