Everyone talks about Crazy On You and Barracuda as the best Heart songs, with maybe a nod towards Straight On, Magic Man, Dog and Butterfly, These Dreams and Alone.
All good but Heart's best song is Mistral Wind, the closing song on Dog and Butterfly. With its gentle opening, leading into its heavy roar in the middle, with the soft coda at the end, it's their Stairway To Heaven. For a live performance from 2002, check it out here: http://youtu.be/XAd9u2h_pRA.
But I told you that story to tell you this one.
At the Kennedy Center Honours last December, Ann and Nancy Wilson came out to perform Stairway To Heaven in front of their rock heroes - the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin. Backed by Jason Bonham on drums, Seattle's finest sister act stole the song from the masters so convincingly that Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones nodded and grinned throughout, both pleased and moved by a riveting interpretation of one of the greatest songs in rock history.
