Song of the Day

The rainy weather over the last week has made it hard to believe it is already June and almost officially summer. When the weather is dreary I like to blast a little upbeat, Caribbean-inspired music: think of it as musical sunshine.

The rainy weather over the last week has made it hard to believe it is already June and almost officially summer.

When the weather is dreary I like to blast a little upbeat, Caribbean-inspired music: think of it as musical sunshine. Today's song of the day packs so much sonic sunshine you'll finally need to crack out the sunscreen.

Shake Senora by Pitbull samples heavily from the calypso hit Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora), which was made famous by Harry Belafonte in 1961. If you can't place where you've heard that one, it was the final song and dance number in the 1988 movie Beetlejuice.

Pitbull cranks the calypso classic up a notch, with help from rappers T-Pain and Sean Paul (and Ludacris in a remix also worthy of a listen).

The song comes from Pitbull's 2011 album Planet Pit, but didn't get as much play as some of the other tracks. No official music video was ever made for the song, but dozens of Zumba dance fitness groups have posted their Shake Senora routines.

The original version of the song can be found online here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmuKdoe8MvI. The remix which also features Ludacris, can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=su5tlkdoNtw.

Or, if you feel like shakin' it old school, Belafonte's Jump in the Line can be found online here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk3sLHZzZRI.
