Aside from a way to let myself indulge in weekly pearl clutching, my favourite television shows also offer a glimpse into previously unexplored musical realms.

Just last month, I was introduced to the amazing Nina Simone rendition of Sinnerman while watching an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock. The tune actually brought me out of the show enough that I had to quickly scribble down the lyrics so I could look it up later.

The song was recorded by the songstress in 1965, but has been kicking around in a variety of iterations since the turn of the century, born as an African-American spiritual.
