Sled dog sentence shows weakness of animal cruelty laws

I was appalled and embarrassed by the court's sentencing decision regarding the slaughter of the sled dogs in Whistler.

I am not entirely surprised by the lack of seriousness that is apparent in most animal cruelty cases in this country, but because of the media coverage, the public outcry, the large B.C. SPCA investigation, and the way in which the dogs were killed, a harsher sentencing should have ensued.

In recent B.C. animal cruelty cases, perpetrators have received jail time for less horrific deeds (thank you to those judges who made these rulings).

Putting emotion aside, this was a chance for Canada to show the world that we will not tolerate such cruelty of vulnerable beings and be leaders in a path towards a more compassionate and civilized society.

But we missed it. And, I am at odds as to why the employer of Bob Fawcett has not taken at least 50 per cent of the blame for this crime.

On a positive note - this case has led to more protection of sled dogs. It has strengthened laws that will protect animals. And, it will help to lead Canadians in the fight for stronger animal protection laws in our province and country.
