Signs, signs, everywhere signs

I have never understood the purpose of political signage.

I have never understood the purpose of political signage.

Every three years our city becomes littered with these signs, but for what reason? Are we meant to vote for the candidate whose sign we like best?

Or is it subliminal; do we unknowingly vote for whichever candidates sign we have seen the most? (Is that why they put three in a row?)

Last week when we had several windy days I saw signs that were blown over, littering ditches and even some broken in half. Now many of them are obscured by snow. Those along roadways are covered in sand.

The cost of all those signs (not to mention expenses such as campaign headquarters) must be thousands of dollars. What a waste of money and resources!

I have to applaud a candidate such as Travis Shaw who has not posted a single sign, but has utilized local media, candidate's forums and social media to promote his platform.

If candidates really want to better Prince George, perhaps they could take money budgeted for signs, donate it to charity and run a race for mayor and city council in a modern, progressive, environmentally friendly manner - without signs.
