On the topic of a Performing Arts Centre for Prince George; we need to be brave and visionary. As the Ford Nation has proven, even really big cities can be full of small minds. This is a perfect opportunity to send a message to rest of the world that Prince George is full of broadminded, intelligent and visionary citizens.
Yes, taxpayers should be concerned that we get value for our dollar. Yes, taxpayers can rightfully demand diligence on the part of City Hall. I believe strongly that City Hall is applying that very diligence. Specifically, Dan Adamson's singular, exemplary dedication to his task of gathering information. He is doing this work objectively and thoroughly.
Before we write letters demanding referendums, we should all take time to learn more about this initiative. As a small business operator and a home owner, I know full well the impact of taxation. However, as a 37 year resident of Prince George I am also keenly aware of t he price we have paid for being penny wise. If we had only constructed the CN Centre in 1994 based solely on the crush for WHL tickets in the early 90's, then the attendance woes of the last decade would certainly have been a disappointment. But, the people who fought for its 30 million dollar construction must have known that there could be another kind of future for such a venue.
Had only taxpayers been given the final say on facilities such as the PG Multiplex(CN Centre), Aquatic Centre, Civic Centre, Massey Place Stadium, Public Library, Kin 1, the Kin Connector, Carrie Jane Grey upgrade, Youth Soccer Fields, Kenworth Park, Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre and (oh yes) the Two Rivers Art Gallery it is likely that none of these facilities would exist today. How sad.
We live in a small remote city. If we want a better quality of life, we have to build it. If we want a richer future full of diversity and unique educational and recreational opportunities for our kids, then we have to make it so. Ironically, an expensive referendum will cost us more precious money proreferendum peeps hope to save. Instead, why not write us all a letter outlining your plan to attract professionals and their salaries to Prince George. Include your long term vision for diversifying our economy and your comprehensive plan to expand cultural diversity.
I wish you luck.
