It was with great dismay that I read the front page of the December 4th issue of the Citizen, which reported that the city fathers have decided to move a step closer to selling the Pine Valley Golf Course
This golf course is a jewel that is being sacrificed at the altar of the almighty dollar.
True, the city has a responsibility to be mindful of taxpayers' dollars but it also has some social responsibility.
Pine Valley offers a course which is affordable and manageable for senior citizens, as well as young players beginning to learn the game. One can play the course, get some fresh air and exercise and still have time left in the day for other pursuits.
Years ago the city fathers of Vancouver and Victoria had the foresight to put aside land for Stanley Park and Beacon Hill Park, thus providing green space and recreations areas for its citizens. The green space in Prince George is being eroded and consequently the air quality in the bowl continues to deteriorate.
Selling Pine Valley is a short-sighted move on the part of City Council. You don't balance the books by selling assets. What will be next, Fort George Park?
