Science and ownership

Changing colours, sqeezing lemons, distracted driving, and seeing holograms were just some of the many science projects on display at the Intermediate Science fair held recently at Foothills elementary school.

Changing colours, sqeezing lemons, distracted driving, and seeing holograms were just some of the many science projects on display at the Intermediate Science fair held recently at Foothills elementary school.

Over 70 project from students in Grades 4 to 7 were on display and judged. The purpose of the fair was not only to allow students to learn and apply science skills but also to determine which projects would move on to the Regional Science Fair at UNBC on April 5.

We give a huge thank you to Mrs. Hibberd, who spent many extra hours behind the scenes organizing this event for students.

Ownership was the theme of our most recent school-wide assembly.

Students learned that ownership takes responsibility and good choices. The O in ownership fits with the O in the school’s acronym, SOAR - safety, ownership, achievement, respect.

At Foothills, we want students to soar. Also, at our most recent assembly, all students who celebrate their birthday in February were treated to the whole school singing happy birthday and given a special birthday pencil. This is a monthly tradition at the school.

Primary students had an extra day to themselves while their teachers spend the day preparing Term 2 report cards which will go home on March 7.

Many of our Grade 7 students were very busy this past week. Our Quiz Me team joined 22 other elementary schools to write the qualifying test for the game show. Our fingers are crossed our team will make the cut.

As well, seven leadership students attended the recent Kids Helping Kids, Healthy Schools training where they pledged to continue to provide healthy activities for our school.

Feb. 18 and 19 marked the third year for the locally developed Kids Helping Kids: Healthy Is Happy Program training day at CNC.

All schools in Prince George have been given the opportunity to participate in the program which focuses on student leadership in the areas of active living and healthy eating, utilizing a trimentorship model.

High school students have received training prior to the event and facilitate the day of training for the elementary leadership students who develop a school specific Action Plan and then take the information back to the younger students in their own schools.

Kids Helping Kids will also be presented in May at the Global Summit on Physical Activity for Children in Toronto.

Southridge elementary continues to be a busy place as we make our way towards Spring Break.

Congratulations to our students for qualifying once again for this year’s Quiz Me.

They have been hard at work getting ready for the district competition in April. Our Grades 6/7 boys and girls basketball teams have been practising and playing games, and are looking forward to the district tournament.

Mr. Clough, Ms. Huber and the Grade 7 students have just finished organizing and running two very successful district floor hockey days on Feb. 21 and 24.

Thanks again to Ms. Huber, Mrs.Stratton, and Ms. Emmerton for their hard work in organizing our recent anti-bullying/WITS/LEADS sessions, and to our student leaders.

Last Wednesday was the official Anti-Bullying day, so once again our school was awash in pink.

Mrs. Brand mentioned that there are several pairs of glasses waiting to be claimed at the office. It is also timely to give a thank-you to our hardworking hot lunch parents, who tally up orders, count money, place the orders, and arrange for the deliveries every week.

Their efforts are very much appreciated, and are a great help to the playground fundraising, too.
