All Around Our Schools

Staff and students at cole Heather Park elementary will be hosting their own winter fun day on Thursday. This event is sponsored by (and in honour of) our French Immersion program, but all students will participate. While modeled after the Quebec Winter Carnaval, we don't have a canoe race through the ice floes of the St. Lawrence, nor a seven-foot tall talking snowman called Bonhomme Carnaval. However, we will have our own 'Bonhomme Heros,' the school's own mascot. There will be plenty of merry-making and a variety of events including: a DVD on Carnaval, Mrs. McGraw's experiences at having taken students to Quebec, snow shoeing, 'dog' sled races, and both sugar and ice sculpture challenges.

Leadership at Blackburn elementary school has been going strong for many years. Last week we competed in the Mardi Gras Snow Daze Snowman Building Contest. Students built 154 snowmen in one hour. To qualify for the competition all snowmen had to be at least one metre tall, have eyes, a nose and arms. We also tried to build the tallest snowman. It was over 3 metres tall. Our latest leadership activity was "July in January." Students were encouraged to dress up in summer wear for the day, and teachers planned fun activities to celebrate.
