School closure raised the ante for single mom

OK, now I'm really ticked off. I moved back to P.G. three years ago with my two young sons.

OK, now I'm really ticked off. I moved back to P.G. three years ago with my two young sons.

When looking for a house, it was very important to me to be close to the boys' schools as I am a single mother and have to go to work every day and thus am unable to drive my kids to school.

I found a house within a block of Spruceland elementary and Lakewood junior. Perfect. It cost more than I really wanted to spend, but the comfort of knowing that no matter what the weather was, my boys could make it to school on their own, made it palatable.

Then, in the spring, the school district was forced to close schools and restructure those that are left. My boys now are going to Duchess Park, which is almost 3.5 km away. Is the school district putting on any extra buses?

No.

So, here I am, forced to pay for bus passes. And to add insult to injury, I read in the paper that bus fare rates are being hiked. Just in time for the start of the school year.

Great.

I am now going to have to pay $36 a month, per child, so they can get to and from school. That's $720 for the school year.

Did they really consider all of the effects of the school closures? I know that nothing can be done to help this situation and I know that I am certainly not the only parent in this spot, but it still frustrates the heck out of me.
