Safety trumps all behind the wheel

I would like to echo the sentiments of Cpl. Craig Douglass and his recent submission to The Citizen.

While speeding is an obvious danger to all who use public roads, there are a large number of infractions that are leading to accidents and deaths on B.C. roads; tailgating, improper signalling, running yellow and red lights, running stop signs, pedestrians not using crosswalks properly and cyclists who are either victim or culprit by not wearing helmets or obeying traffic signs.

My favourite is still the use of cell phones and devices by those operating a vehicle.

One in four automotive deaths in B.C. are now the result of using cell phone and hand-held devices while driving yet every day I see people using their phones and more alarmingly texting while behind the wheel. To put it bluntly, the people doing this may as well pocket the phone and go to the pub and drive after a few because it would be statistically safer, at least the drunk driver is looking out the windscreen!

This may sound like yet another rant from a 'do-gooder' but these actions will sooner or later have consequences and only when it is due to you that someone dies or it is someone you know that is dead will the absolute stupidity of all of these actions become solvent in your collective minds.

If you can't understand the concept of signaling before entering the turn lane, are confused about staying right except to pass while driving up the Hart or you can't leave the "all-important" text or call until you've completed your journey, then it may be time to turn in your license.

This letter will provoke anger, flippant remarks and probably a few responses arguing against what I have written but I ask you this: why is it that I have to stand on my front yard to try and stop people from speeding through a school zone at speeds approaching 70 km/h? Many of them dropping their own children off safely at school. Why?
