Sacred Heart students to take much anticipated visits to Huble Homestead and Camp Morice

Around our schools

The primary students at Sacred Heart school visited the P.G. Tennis Club this week.

Our Grade 6 and 7 students participated in the first annual Terry Wilson Memorial Tournament on June 7.

Our Grade 2 and 3 class will celebrate the Eucharist with their Prayer Friends at Sacred Heart Cathedral this week. Huble Homestead is on the agenda for this class in the coming days.

Our Grade 7 students will travel to Camp Morice at Ft. St. James to enjoy fellowship and fun before their graduation on June 23.

Sincere thanks to Ms. Ruddy for organizing this much anticipated trip. Our swimming program continues in June.

Mrs. Cooper and five very fortunate Westwood elementary students attended a potlatch this past week sponsored by the Fire Pit, a cultural drop in center located on 3rd Ave. Everyone was placed in a clan - either bear, frog, caribou, or eagle. A lunch feast was served by the RCMP, and all participants received gifts of food and treats. It was a great experience for all, and everyone learned a lot.

The sound of music filled the gym as staff and students were treated to a performance by two DP Todd bands. Three former Westwood students, now attending DP Todd, returned, along with their bandmates to perform.

These Grade 10 students, members of the concert and jazz bands at DP Todd, delighted the students with their playing. This was a wonderful way for our students to see and hear different instruments in action.

Westwood athletes were in fine form at the recent elementary track and field meet held at Masich Place.

Thank you to students, parents, coaches, and supervisors for making this a great day for participants.

Mini red and yellow peppers were a delicious treat for students, which ends the fruit and vegetable program for the year. A big thank you to the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation for sponsoring this program in our school.

The school grounds got a recent facelift when staff and students joined forces in a school-wide spring clean-up. A big thank you to everyone for showing pride in our community by pitching in to pick up garbage.

Each division of Highglen Montessori elementary school has now planted their seed packets into the school garden. These seeds and seedlings will be tended to over the next few weeks and through the summer to enjoy the bounty of the earth.

This week students from Mrs. Rockwell and Mrs. Nemitz's class enjoyed a field day on Wednesday with a class from Foothills Elementary. These two classes will walk up University Way to enjoy numerous activities at UNBC in preparation for their trip to Mount Robson next week.

On Friday, tents will be brought to school for the practice of putting them up. Very important.

Mrs. Dionne's class drew and submitted pictures for the PG Citizen's weather page - take a look because they have already been published.

Mrs. Haddock's class is completing their research papers on whatever subject interests them. These five-page reports, complete with cover page, index and bibliography, will be submitted at the end of this week.

Students from Ms. Broughton, Ms. Croft and Mrs. Scott's class packed up the bus on Wednesday morning to stay two nights at Chubb Lake.

Congratulations to Mme. Dougherty and all the students and staff at cole Heather Park elementary school who participated in our recent Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. It was an overwhelming success, with the final total of monies raised for the Heart and Stroke Foundation coming in at a whopping $9313.26.

Last week many Grade 4 students from several different classrooms enjoyed a trip to Ft. St. James Historic Site for a full day of hands on learning about the fur trade. Their Grade 5 classmates enjoyed going to Barkerville for a fun filled day of gold-panning and other learning activities around B.C.'s gold rush.

Recently several classes visited the canoe launch site at Cottonwood Island Park to listen to a fisheries presenter and release their salmon fry into the Nechako River.

Today, all Grade 7 students and their families are invited to the third annual Flight of the 7th Grader hosted by KRSS between 4 and 6 p.m. This transition activity includes a barbecue dinner and a scavenger hunt through the school.

Students will meet KRSS staff and support workers, learn the different areas of the school and have all their Grade 8 questions answered.

The barbecue follows a special Gym Riot held previously at KRSS.

That ice-breaker included a variety of fun challenges and ended with a pizza lunch.

An enthusiastic handful of students and staff from the yearbook club had a day-long blitz to put the finishing touches on the inaugural Heather Park yearbook as it goes off to the printer mid-week for publishing.

Adventurous spirits and hearty leg muscles rule as Mr. Pineault's Grade 6 and 7 class enjoyed an afternoon of exercise and good fun riding to Otway with Mrs. Pillipow's KRSS Outdoor Education class.

Friday is the final Primary Report Card Writing Day - so all students from Kindergarten through Grade 3 are at home.
