Running aground

Captain Francesco Schettino is currently facing criminal charges for running the Costa Concordia, his cruise ship, on to rocks along the Italian coastline. I believe the mistake the Italian captain made was the body of water he picked to guide the Concordia aground. If he had done it off the B.C. coast, like the ferry sinking in 2006, maybe he not only would be not facing immediate criminal charges, there wouldn't be any truly extensive inquiry and it wouldn't be ever known what really happened. Captain Schettino's difficulty is also that he apparently killed the more valuable Italian and international citizens instead of a couple of Canadian native Indians, as the B.C. ferry sinking appeared to do.
