Rumble in the 50s?

Dear Editor: Would you be kind enough to pose a question to readers?

In late April 1953, The Citizen reported a brawl at the old airport where it was alleged that about 40 people thrashed it out in an arena formed by vehicles. According to the newspaper, this had been sparked by gang troubles in Prince George and, in particular, a couple of local girls wearing strides - the loose legged, pegged trousers that were associated with Zoot suits (I kid you not). However, some people have suggested to me that the brawl might have actually involved U.S. Air Force personnel battling it out with local men, in part, over the affections of local girls and women. This latter explanation is feasible as I believe the radar station at Baldy Hughes went operational in 1953. To make matters even more interesting, 1953 was also the year of the IWA strike (which occurred in the autumn) although it's possible that local tempers were frayed in the spring and perhaps that played a role.

So, here's your homework dear readers - does anyone care to venture a few thoughts on the rumble at the airport in 1953?

You can drop me a line at the university via email, leave a telephone message at 250-960-5310, or of course, respond via the newspaper.

Thanks,
