Today is the one year anniversary of our son's death. Five Canadians were tragically killed in the hotel explosion in Mexico. It has been a roller coaster ride since that day but we have somehow tried to remain strong.
We share with the other families our grief and our strength, as we all have a common thread that joins our families.
It's a hurt and pain that will always haunt us.
So many things can be said, a lot of negativity about that tragic day. Instead we choose to honor and thank Jeff Westwell, a firefighter from Manchester England. Jeff is trained in head injuries and trauma and has served as a firefighter for over 20 years.
He stood over Malcolm and did everything possible to save our son. For over 20 minutes he tried unselfishly to bring our son back to life. Without any proper equipment, Jeff's efforts were limited.
Our family can't thank him enough for his bravery on that day. To know that Malcolm didn't die in a pile of rubble, to know that he had Jeff there to hold his hand and comfort him while he took his last breath and gently passed away, comforts us.
As Malcolm's family, we are beyond grateful just knowing that there are people like Jeff in our world. Thank you Jeff Westwell. To Malcolm just know that your two children will mirror you.
Thank you for the treasures you gave us. Children are the rainbow of life. Grandchildren are the pot of gold. Rest in peace son.
