All Around Our Schools

Teachers, students and parents of Highglen Montessori elementary school congratulate Mr. Tom Paterson as he has started a new position within the district office. We wish him well in his new adventure. We would also like to warmly welcome Ms. Karen Paterson (no relation) as our new principal.

The relay teams had a fabulous day on Tuesday at Masich Stadium. The weather was a bit cold but it did not deter the runners or the cheering heard from the stands, in fact it may have been a way to keep warm.

Mrs. Hill-Tout has sent home a notice looking for some material to make a musical instrument next week. Each class will be participating and all are excited to learn what they will be making.

Students welcome author, Diane Swanson next week. She will be presenting her work and giving appropriate presentations to each level of class, an exciting time happening in the library. Thank you to our PAC for contributing funds to bring her to Prince George.

Heather Park middle school is thrilled with the outstanding accomplishments of our Grade 8 students who participated in the recent preliminaries for the Junior Math Contest sponsored by CNC. Our students swept the top four places, Jenna W., first; Sabrina M., second; Brendan B. and Kelsey T. third, and Jesse U, fourth. These students have been invited to participate in the final CNC Junior Math Contest at CNC.

HPMS was activity-central as students participated in a number of district-wide events. An enthusiastic group of six teams gave it their all at Masich Place Stadium last Wednesday. The Boys Junior team of Brandon H., Logan M., Garrett A. and Erik M. placed first and the Bantam girls team of Stefanie M., Sabrina K., Daniell B. and Kyrsten F. placed third.

We could not be prouder of the Grade 8 students who participated in the 28th annual Prince George Speech Arts and Drama Festival last Thursday and earned two of the top three placements in their grade category. Way to go: Sydney K., second, and Donovan L., third.

Congratulations to many students from Immaculate Conception school who participated in the Prince George Speech Arts Festival last week. Students in Grades 2 and 5 continue to run a recycling program to raise funds to buy school supplies for a school in Uganda.

Mrs. Kruger's Grade 1 class is very excited to receive the eggs they hope will soon hatch into beautiful little chicks.

This week was very busy at Duchess Park. Monday there was an ICBC Road Sense speaker, Wednesday, Reach Out Psychosis early intervention presentation and Friday is the official opening of the new Duchess Park school. Next week, Duchess Park continues the long standing tradition of the Grade 8 trip to the Flying U Ranch. This year two groups of Grade 8 students will head off on this 34-year tradition. Students leave town on Monday morning and spend a week on the ranch. The groups ride horses, learn the history of the Cariboo region, spend time learning about life on the ranch, including chores, participate in sing-a-longs and enjoy ranch-cooked meals. Thank you to the sponsors, Mr. Sillence and Mr. Cramer. Our drama class is preparing a pirate presentation for our feeder elementary schools. The group is working hard building sets, rehearsing lines and learning about lighting and sound. We are looking forward to the first production in our new theatre.

Foothills elementary is one school out of 12 Prince George schools that registered to participate in Music Monday, May 3. Each school banded together to sing Serena Ryder's catchy tune "Sing, Sing" and we were joined by more than 2,000 other schools across Canada, all singing the same song at the same time (10 a.m. PST) to raise awareness of the importance of music education in our schools. At Foothills, we were accompanied by three talented boys from Grade 7 who played electric guitars and drums. We also heard from several students in each grade about how music has impacted their lives. After the school assembly, all the students went outside to the field to form "S-I-N-G" with their bodies. For more information about the annual Music Monday celebration on the first Monday of every May, see the Coalition for Music Education wesite: www.musicmonday.ca.

On April 9, Julia, Darcee and Kylie from Hart Highland school in Mrs. Astorino's class had a great adventure when they went to Ron Brent school for the Battle of the Books. They were asked questions about 15 books that the students had read. After the "battle" they went for lunch at a local pizza place and had lots of fun. On April 20, Hart Highland school had a performance from the Old Fort Traditional Dancers group. It was a big hit at, as everyone from kindergarten to Grade 5 got up and danced. From the dancing group there were three boys and two girls who danced along with one girl who played the drum and sang.

The school had a performance by Joe Ink in which the intermediate grades participated in learning how to move and dance.
