Recycling is way to go

Some call it "trash," "refuse," or "waste," but it's just plain "garbage.

Some call it "trash," "refuse," or "waste," but it's just plain "garbage."

Every time I see how little garbage our small household generates, thanks to recycling, my mind envisions the huge volume of recyclables that are filling the Foothills landfill.

Last April 1, according to the regional district budget, Prince George's share of the cost of disposing of solid "waste" will jump by 20.5 per cent to $6.9 million, yet city council remains luke-warm about looking seriously at a legislated recycle program.

Many people do take care of it privately, but many do not. Debra Munoz seems to be the only really concerned councillor . . . a voice "crying in the wilderness."

If you look at the website of the Recycling Council of BC rcbc.bc.ca you will see many cities and communities, large and small, are members, but no City of Prince George. This site has a wealth of information and reminds us all that Waste Reduction Week is Oct. 18 to 24 . . . you can even download a poster.

So, with many great plans - winter Olympics, Performing Arts Centre and trips to China - it seems to me that the city should look seriously to its housekeeping.

Now, practically all plastics can be recycled (even London Drugs will recycle Styrofoam from their products) and "blue boxes" have become a part of our vocabulary.

When is it going to happen? MyPG.ca doesn't really tell us.
