Questions about dugout canoe

I noted the making of the dugout canoe with great interest. I would think there never was a dugout canoe made in Prince George and it is probable that this one is the first one ever made here.

The report of the race said it worked well coming down river.

How well would it work going upriver? I am told it would be very exhausting to paddle such a heavy craft up stream. A family of four with all their possessions plus their stored food would be a big load. Could they make headway against the current? When they came to a rapid they would not have a rope strong enough to pull the craft up stream. They would not have a steel ax to clear a portage trail. The canoe would be too heavy to carry.
