To all the people who live in College Heights and especially Imperial Crescent please lock up your garbage and your garbage cans as we have a very large, male black bear in the area who loves to drag your garbage from your yard to our front lawn and eat your garbage underneath our tree. This bear is no longer afraid of humans and he will not run away when you make noise. This bear will hiss and snarl at you but it will not run. This bear was in the area in the spring, eating your garbage and now it is back, it likes to come between 10 and 11 p.m. the night before garbage day, but now it is coming every night as more people are not locking up their garbage cans. I personally am becoming very tired of cleaning up other peoples' garbage off of my front lawn (and remember your garbage could have your address somewhere in it) and it makes me very nervous to go outside in the evening now that it is dark, knowing that we have a bear that is unafraid of me.

If you do not have a garage to store your garbage can in a simple solution to the problem is a heavy bungee cord that you attach to the lid and under the lip in the front of your can. The trick is heavy and tight, we have used this solution since the city had us all acquire their wheeled cans and we have had no bears in our can. Just remember to unhook your can the morning of your garbage day and please stop putting your garbage can curb-side before you go to bed as you are inviting a curb-side buffet for these bears.
