Prince George roads difficult for the uninitiated

Like a gift from the paving gods, I left my house a few weeks ago in the minivan with my noisy children in tow to discover that a road near my house was actually being repaved. In practical terms, this meant that I was late for an appointment because of the road delays but I did not care because "Hallelujah!" the road was being paved.

The state of our roads in Prince George is always a hot topic for debate in our city whether it's the snow removal in winter or our beloved pothole season. I have been known to breathe a (short) sigh of relief after the first snow hits because, at a bare minimum, the snow would fill in the worst of the holes and maybe save the suspension in the minivan for another season.

Drivers in our city must rely on history to effectively drive in town. Visitors to Prince George could be flummoxed by the lack of road lines on Fifth Avenue heading into town whereas a born and bred Prince Georgian clearly remembers the lines painted on the road at one point in the distant past and thinks that there are three driving lanes and a right turning lane at Victoria Street. And any Prince Georgian knows that 5th Ave turns into 4th Ave and doesn't see a huge problem with it. Meanwhile, visitors to our city may cry out at intervals: "Why are there no road lines in this city! How many lanes are there? Is there a bike lane?"

Silly visitors. The answers to your questions are as follows:

No. 1: There are no lines on the road because the road salt eats away at the paint and we'd rather have money for fixing potholes or clearing snow.

No. 2: If you're unsure about how many lanes there are in any given area in town, guess and the honking from other drivers will tell you if you're wrong.

No. 3: There is not likely a bike lane so share the road.

Happy driving Prince George and enjoy the select areas of repaved roads in town before the snow falls.
