When I arrived in Prince George in the spring of 1955, power was being generated and sold to residents by the City of Prince George from a generating plant on First Avenue near the Cameron Street Bridge.
It was not very reliable and we were used to many blackouts (one small benefit of the system was that cooling water from the generators was piped up the hill to heat the old Watrous Street outdoor swimming pool in summer).
When BC Hydro moved in a couple of big generators and took over the city's distribution system we were all happy to see the end of those common power outages.
For years we have seen very reliable power but I wonder if BC Hydro has been keeping up with maintenance on the distribution system. It was just like 1955 this past couple of weeks.
I counted 16 power outages over a period of 12 days between March 2 and March 14.
Maybe it is time for some preventive maintenance instead of just patching up after each outage.
