PETA loves them seals

We have to wonder if your editorial writer even watched PETA's new "Canada. Explore Elsewhere" video (Opinion, May 12). PETA's video does not show "whitecoats" being slaughtered.

PETA's video does not show "whitecoats" being slaughtered. Killing whitecoats is illegal - as the government likes to remind us every chance it gets. However, commercial sealers can legally club and shoot baby seals as soon as the animals begin to molt their white natal fur, when they are about 12 days old.

The difference between bashing in the head of a 12-day-old seal and that of a 13-day-old seal is surely lost on most people.

Canadian officials may disregard seals' immense suffering - including seals being hooked in the eye, cheek, or mouth and dragged across the ice, sometimes while they are still conscious - but at some point they must acknowledge the damage that the seal slaughter is doing to Canada's reputation. To find out why PETA is encouraging tourists to "explore elsewhere" until the seal slaughter is stopped, please visit www.CanadasShame.com.
