After attending the open house for the Northern Supportive Recovery Center and the Haldi community meeting last week I have begun to wonder what is really going on.
Many of my neighbours have valid concerns about this facility in our neighbourhood. I wondered why the community meeting was called without having been informed about the facts of what was going on first.
I attended to find a room of negative people. Right from the start I sensed malicious intent from some who presented misinformation trying to infuse fear in the residents.
I found it disheartening as neighbours made assumptions and spoke violently against something they had little knowledge of.
At the open house the society made their presentation and answered questions. Much was clarified in regards to zoning and the facility.
I feel that some people in attendance misunderstood some key points because often people only hear what they want to.
These meetings sickened me. Some of my neighbours seem to think only of themselves and their pockets. Their concerns for children getting poked with needles and such are presumptive.
We cannot shelter our children from reality. Addictions happen. One can recover if given opportunity and means.
It's more appropriate to educate our children about what's around us than shelter them creating a world of fear where they cannot grow to their full potential as well rounded individuals.
I see the need for a facility of this nature in our region to positively touch the lives of women who need that second chance and a helping hand. I know the success rate is not 100 per cent but what is?
For all the NIMBYs out there, I feel sorry that you are being manipulated through misinformation, fear and propaganda... pins, flags, placards. I've even felt threatened as I read "we are watching you."
At least be honest and post your real reasons for opposing this proposed facility (money and fear).
I saw pins at the open house reading "Hutda yes Haldi no."
Clearly there are supporters of the Hutda Lake society playing devils advocate to split an otherwise welcoming community in two to destroy their competition.
On a positive note, during the open house, tension in the room lessened as questions were answered.
I hope to see this facility open to contribute positively to our society and for the learning experiences it will bring to our community.
Your friendly neighbourhood Haldi residents.
