I'd rather be teaching
instead, I walk the line.
'Round my neck, like an anchor,
hangs my picket sign.
I'd rather be teaching,
but I've been locked out.
My classroom is empty;
My heart's full of doubt.
I'd rather be teaching,
but I want to be heard.
This government's not listening,
nor keeping their word.
I'd rather be teaching,
with all of my heart,
but my contract's been stripped,
and my trust torn apart.
I'd rather be teaching,
but I can't stand by
while government cutbacks
bleed the school system dry.
I'd rather be teaching,
but I need to fight
because I don't bow to bullies;
I stand up for what's right.
I'd rather be teaching,
but these Liberals must learn
they're not above the law,
and my vote must be earned.
