I was pleased to see how much the Citizen featured Northern Hardware on its 95th birthday.
I want to add to the Northern lore. A few years ago Anne and I planned on roasting a chicken for Christmas dinner. That morning the element in our oven blew. Change of plans. Lots to do with a chicken on top of the stove.
The day after Boxing Day (remember when stores used to be closed on Boxing Day?) I took the element to the store looking for a replacement. I told our story to an employee.
I did not realize that the then CEO, Ted Moffatt (a friend and neighbour) was within earshot. Ted approached and said, "Blaine, you should have phoned. I would have come down."
And he would have.
Last week I bought two bags of fertilizer weighing 15 kg. each. Two trips. From out of nowhere a diminutive female clerk asked "Where are you parked?" Try for that kind of service at a big box store.
And lastly, once I did comparative shopping for small items like flashlight batteries, the Northern was either competitive or cheaper than the other bigger stores. I will only shop for hardware at the Northern. A real treasure in our city.
