In his recent letter, John Beebe claims we need to put major infrastructure initiatives to referendum, particularly the proposed Regional Performing Arts Centre.
Let us remember that this particular project will only be built if significant portions of the capital costs come from sources other than Prince George taxpayer's wallets. If we achieve a sizeable partnership with private sources and other levels of government then I believe we can only stand to gain.
Perhaps Mr. Beebe sees no reason to build infrastructure for artists in our community, but I believe a good many broad-minded Prince Georgians do. It seems rather flippant to suggest that we put taxpayers out by insisting on costly votes every time we wish to push forward with progressive initiatives that will diversify our community and our economy.
I cannot imagine any resident, be they an hourly wage earner or an affluent business person, not supporting projects that foster imagination and support creative thinking, especially when the resulting industry will bring more wealth to all. After all, progress often demands that we must trade something in return. In this case the benefits will far out weigh the costs.
If we must hold a vote, why not ask residents the following: "What kind of community do you want? It is time for all of us to support bold, new and diverse initiatives in our community.
