I would like to question Mark Nielsen's article on jaywalking. He states that "you should make sure you're at a crosswalk, otherwise you could get a ticket with a stiff fine." I have contacted City Hall and Prince George does not have a jaywalking bylaw. The Motor Vehicle Act Section 180 states that "when a pedestrian is crossing a highway at a point not in a crosswalk, the pedestrian must yield the right of way to a vehicle."
Whether you agree with jaywalking or not, that law means that a pedestrian can only be ticketed in Prince George if he/she fails to yield to oncoming traffic. I am also wondering why, if this is such a serious offence, that you see police officers constantly parking their vehicles on the south side of 10th Avenue and jaywalking across 10th Avenue to the police station. I, therefore, find this article misleading. Just to set the record straight, I have NOT received a jaywalking ticket.
