New Food and wine/beer columnist

Louis Richer was born in Cairo - Egypt in 1935 of French and Greek parents. Educated in British and French institutions, he took arts, sciences, languages and music.

Educated in British and French institutions, he took arts, sciences, languages and music. In sports, he won Egypt's swimming championships two years in a row, in the 100 meter freestyle and backstroke, played golf and volleyball.

He graduated at the Hotel School of the Swiss Hotelkeepers Association in Lausanne- Switzerland (1958-1961).

He joined Hilton Hotels International at the Nile Hilton in Cairo and opened two Hilton properties in Athens - Greece, and Tehran - Iran.

Immigrating to Montreal in 1965, he started his catering business, and retired to Calgary for family reasons in 2005. Up to very recently he was a consultant for The Wine Shop in Calgary.

After designing some successful marketing and merchandizing strategies, he trained personnel and conducted weekly wine-tasting sessions.

Several microbreweries and wineries have contacted him to create food recipes for their websites, and he also publishes two columns on food, beer and wine pairings in newspapers in Alberta, the Yukon, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, writing in the quarterly review Wine out of a Glass which also publishes on beer as well.
