For the last few months, my columns have been, shall we say, weather-obsessed. This has been the case for two reasons: 1) the weather has been awful and 2) Ive been stuck in the house with two children. Luckily, we in Prince George, have been given the blessings of the sun for the last few weeks and even though its still been bitingly cold I think that everyone appreciates the sunshine. Except for my son.
In an effort to get my duff out of the house and enjoy the sunshine, Ive been bundling the kids up and attending the last few sessions of the Toddler Time stories and songs at the Library this last week which will now be on break until the end of March. While driving to the library, the sky was blue and the sun was so bright that I had to put on sunglasses and I was happy. Meanwhile, my son in the back of the van was crying out: My eyes! Owie! No sun! No sun! Who hates the sun? Vampires and my toddler son.
I made sure that I parked in the library dungeon parking lot where there wasnt any sun to prevent him from bursting into flames and we had a fabulous time at the Library with tears only when we had to come home and when the sun came out again. I would like to give a quick shout out to the Prince George Library, the various Strong Start programs around town and the Health Unit for having such a diverse and awesome batch of programs for parents and caregivers of young children. The sheer volume of support that is available for new and tired moms around this city is astonishing and I appreciate it. I am increasingly grateful for these fabulous (and free) programs that help entertain and teach our kids while providing a place for us all to get out of the house during these last tiring winter months. Thank you to everyone who is involved with these programs and a job well done.
Im reminding everyone who reads my column that were almost in the clear and it hasnt snowed in a while (if it snows because I wrote that sentence, Im sorry). Spring is right around the corner and really, I promise, soon well have to mow our lawns again instead of shoveling the driveway. So in the meantime, get outside and enjoy the sun while its still here, unless youre a vampire.
