More differences than similarities

I refer to your editorial of June 8th that contained your commentary on the U.S. election.

Whilst it is true that there are many similarities between Clinton and Trump - age, state, and more - there are also differences that are telling.

Trump carries an endorsement from the leader of the KKK (and other white supremacists) and has attacked a federal judge due to his race; he has constantly promised to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. and has been calling Mexicans in America murderers and rapists. Not to mention his plan to bar any Muslim from entering the United States.

His bias and racist views are openly displayed in his rants and the violence which he promotes.

The issue of the so-called Trump University, his many past business failures, and forgotten promises are notable. Most vile is his attack on the judge hearing one of the two TrumpU cases. Following the logic of his comment, if a judge has an ethnic background which in some way is contrary to your own professed beliefs or background, that judge should be disqualified from hearing the case.

To apply that locally, any First Nations person accused or sued could demand a non-European judge to hear the case and "whites" could refuse a First Nations judge. Trump's rants concerning this point are deeply disturbing to anyone who favours equal rights for all and totally contrary to Canadian principles.

In foreign relations, Clinton is an acknowledged expert.

Trump would pull out of NATO and other alliances and praises the leaders of North Korea and Russia while childishly picking fights with the British prime minister. World leaders generally are fearful of a Trump victory, afraid of the irrational threats and policies Trump espouses and his potential control of the world's largest military force.

To suggest the two are similar, while superficially valid, denies the vast differences in these issues and more. The world, let alone the United States, would face an uncertain and terrifying future if Trump were to be elected.
