Medical care a team effort

Your article regarding a special medical facility to help alleviate the backlog of patients without a family doctor is one of the most sensible ideas I have heard in a long time.

I am a retired nurse practitioner who worked for many years at Klinic Community Health Center in Winnipeg. Our doctors were on salary and we were able to assist new Canadians and others who were unable to access health care.

We also reached out to the community caring for seniors, families, and those with mental health problems.

Patients were treated as a whole person. Social issues, finances, housing and more impact on ones health. Yes our doctors even visited seniors and others in their homes.

We accessed the geriatric department of several hospitals and geriatric specialists even did assessments in patient's homes.

I am sure given the right support this new facility will make a great difference to many residents of Prince George.

Perhaps some of the work done for seniors and others by other communities may eventually be considered as part of their focus. We need a team approach when assisting patients with complicated multi problem

health needs. A team approach that is patient centered.
